22 • Asahi Kogaku Takumar 500mm f/5 Model II with Cap and Case- Very Rare Collector Tier

The history of the 500mm Takumar series mirrors the evolution of the Asahi Optical Company (Pentax) from early innovative experimenter to a dominant force in multi-coated optical technologies.

Rarity Tier Breakdown
• Production Year: 1965 • Asahi Takumar 500mm f/5 (Model I - 1957): Extremely Rare (Museum Tier)
• Production Year: 1965 • Estimated Production: ~200 copies total.
• Production Year: 1965 • Context: Built during the transition from the Asahiflex to the modern M42 Pentax SLR system. Finding a surviving functional copy is exceptionally difficult; they reside almost exclusively in private collections.

• Production Year: 1965 • Asahi Takumar 500mm f/5 (Model II - 1958–1965): Very Rare (Collector Tier)
• Production Year: 1965 • Estimated Production: ~2,500 copies total.
• Production Year: 1965 • Context: According to historical data tracked by the Takumar Field Guide, only a tiny fraction of these have surfaced publicly on secondary markets over the last two decades. They appear for sale only a few times a year globally.

• The Blueprint (1955): Before the M42 universal screw mount became standard, Asahi introduced its first 500mm prime as an Asahi-Kogaku Takumar 500mm f/5 for the early Asahiflex M37 screw-mount camera.
• The Transition to M42 (1957–1958): With the birth of the first modern Asahi Pentax AP SLR camera, the company moved to the M42 thread mount. The final batches of the original \(f/5\) optics were adapted into M42 mounts.
• The Model II f/5 Era (1958–1965): Asahi launched the Model II f/5 variant under its updated name, Asahi Optical Co.. These early presets relied on a massive mechanical footprint and manual presets to cater to early sports and press photography.
• The f/4.5 Shift & Multi-Coating (1966–1975): In 1966, Asahi redesigned the system into a faster Takumar 500mm f/4.5 configuration. When Pentax pioneered its industry-changing 7-layer anti-reflective coatings in 1971, this lens was upgraded to the Super-Multi-Coated (SMC) Takumar 500mm f/4.5, dramatically cutting down the lens flare and internal reflections inherent to massive front glass elements.

• Production Year: 1959? • Field of View: 5° • Minimum Focus: 32.9' • f5.0-22 • Filters 95mm Front / 49mm Rear • Takumar Built In Hood
